No. Extra driver fees are included in our daily hire rate. In order to be covered by our insurance policy, anyone who drives the camper needs to be recorded on the rental agreement.

Windscreen and tyre damage is especially common in New Zealand due to loose gravel, even on main roads. On average, one in three vehicles returns from its hire with some sort of damage. Taking out full insurance will give peace of mind knowing that you are covered in the unfortunate event of damage to the vehicle.

Bay of Islands Campervans provides the service for a vehicle to be picked up and dropped off at any domestic airport.
We believe you best rent kayak's or (mountain) bikes and/or hook up with a guided tour for a day or two rather than transport them on your campervan. We do not equip the vehicles with towbars or bike racks.

Choose your Campervan

Our campervans are easy to drive, have high performing turbo diesel engines, and all the added features of a modern European vehicle including ABS and airbags. There are no restrictions to the 100km/hr (60mph) road speed limit. Just be aware of the height and wider than normal car-body and your sweet!
All vehicles come fully equipped with: Pillows & Duvets, Sheets(2x), Towels(4x), Cooking Utensils, Pots/Pans/Frypan, Plates & Bowls, Cups & Glasses, Electric Kettle, Scissor, Dish Cloth, Dish Brush, Tea Towels, Electric Toaster, Cutlery, Tin Opener, Coffee Plunger, Food Containers, Chopping Board, Clothes Hangers, Clothes Line & Pegs, Bucket, Dustpan & Broom, Fire Extinguisher, Waste & Fresh Water Hose, Toilet Chemical, Full LPG Bottle(s), cell-phone and Laptop.
To make finding your way around easy: a GPS unit is installed in all campervans, motorhomes. Besides the GPS unit; a detailed HEMA touring atlas including marked campsites, DOC-campsites, dump stations and points of interest.
All our campervans come with a safety box.
As our campervans are certified self contained you can freedom camp in places where freedom camping is permitted. Please respect the camping policies of each community and minimize the impact of your stop over on our natural resources.
Bay of Islands Campervans are all well insulated and heated, either by diesel heater (Nexxo) or a small electric heater (Explorer). When travelling in the winter we recommend the Nexxo with a diesel heater. Air-con is present is all front cabs when driving. The air-con can only be used when the motor-engine is running.
Sorry, no smoking!
In general you will be able to use all facilities without being plugged in for up to 48 hours without driving during this period. It really depends on what appliances you’re using and how often, and also how often you drive around (as that helps charge the vehicle’s house battery). If you are driving once a day for a longer period of time, it will recharge the batteries and you won't see the battery levels coming down much. However we do recommend to stay overnight at a powered site every second or third night to fully recharge the batteries - just in case you don't drive enough to fully recharge them. The car is operated by another battery, so even when the house battery is flat, you are able to start the engine.
The fridge, lights in the living compartment as well as the water pump and TV/DVD player will all work whilst not plugged in. Mains power is required to operate the microwave, as well as anything that needs to be plugged into the power points such as a computer or phone charger.
The Nexxo T569 campervan have an iPod or iPhone in the front cab entertainment system. You can also plugin any devise using a mini usb. Unfortunate there is no input for an iPod, MP3 player or iPhone in the front cab of the Explorer, however you can play CDs.
The Nexxo motorhome is equipped with a TV/DVD player (Explorer not) NZ has very limited reception outside of the metropolitan areas. NZ has a problem with hills, The TV unit in the Nexxo is ideal for DVD movie playing, and limited TV viewing. For safety reasons, watching TV while driving is not permitted in any of our vehicles.
All Bay of Islands Campervans have a Fixed Double Bed, no need to change the seating area every night!
  • Nexxo:       202*132
  • Explorer:   196*130

All our Bay of Islands Campervans run on diesel using between 9 litres/100km and 11 litres/100km. Diesel is cheaper than petrol in New Zealand.
New Zealand uses different power plugs to the rest of the world. New Zealand power outlets accept power plugs with 3 flat pins - 1 of which is an earthing pin (this is simply a safety measure). Some power plugs don't have the earthing pin but they still fit into the power outlets. Most likely, if you are coming from overseas you will need an adapter.
There are a few things that you may not be used to when driving in New Zealand. We drive on the left side of the road, using a hand -held mobile while driving is illegal. We provide a New Zealand Transport Agency booklet with some basic rules and advise to check the New Zealand Transport Agency website before you start driving.
To keep in touch, or book camping-grounds etc. we provide a mobile-phone and laptop. Our campervans are fitted with onboard wifi, so you can bring your own mobile device and connect. Internet data is included when you have the Full Cover Insurance option, otherwise it is charged. See our extra charges page for more details.
Travel times and distances in New Zealand are often misjudged. Highways (except round a few cities) are comparable to 80Km roads in Europe, USA or Australia. Use an average of 60 kilometers per hour to calculate the travel time for a certain distance. In other words: Travel distances in New Zealand will be calculated in hours and less in the distance traveled. Mountains, mostly two lane windy roads prevent you a quick ride from A to B. On the Road

Gas is used for cooking and hot water supply in the Explorer. Gas is used for cooking and refrigerator in the Nexxo. The 9Kg gas bottle should provide up to two weeks of gas; subject to use.
campground reservations are not usually required for camping in New Zealand For all but the two weeks after Christmas and holiday weekends over summer as well as the Easter holidays. You can find all approved camping sites on our map
You will be covered by our policy on DOC campsite access roads and other all other named roads. You are not covered if you travel on a beach, through a river or salt water, or on a road that is in such poor condition that it damages the vehicle. We strongly recommend you choose to add the Full Cover Insurance option to your rental to make sure you are covered in case of any damages to the vehicle.
We advise to do so during peak periods such as school holidays, public holidays and long weekends.
Bay of Islands Campervans provided 24 hour roadside assistance through the Automobile Association for your peace of mind.
We will give you a “dry run” how to empty waste water and toilet cassette during your vehicle familiarization at pick up. Dump stations are listed on the onboard HEMA touring atlas. You can also find them on our map

Freedom camping in the Lake District

Freedom camping in New Zealand

Queenstown is the centre of the Lake District, a very popular place to visit on the South Island. Not only is it the ‘Adventure Capital’ of New Zealand where you can do the original Bungy-jump, Skydive, Wild Water Rafting and Jet Boating to name some it is one of the few places with a sort of ‘night life’ with clubs and bars.

Freedom camping

Not a party goer or thrill seeker? Parts of the ‘Lord of the Rings’ are filmed amid the mountains, lakes, rivers and forests and Queenstown is the gateway to the Milford Sound, Fiordland.
